The contemporary state of media offers exciting opportunities yet also presents significant challenges. Ryan Gilder's career ambition is to become a sports journalist after college. Gilder believes Las Vegas offers tremendous opportunities in sports media, and the recent expansion of sports in the city has opened doors for sports journalists. In the recent development of sports in Las Vegas, the city has brought in the Golden Knights, Raiders, Aces, and many more teams. Also, Las Vegas has hosted numerous national sporting events, including the NFL Draft, NCAA Men's Basketball Championship Tournament, and the Pro Bowl. The future of Las Vegas is, if not just as bright, brighter than the current state with the Oakland Athletics buying land for a new stadium in Las Vegas, F1 racing on the strip in the fall of 2023, and Allegiant Stadium hosting the Super Bowl in Feb. 2024.
As the president of UNLV's student radio station and a podcast host for the school's baseball and women's basketball teams, Gilder has learned how social media platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter are transforming the broadcasting industry.
Gilder understands that generating revenue is pivotal in sports media however, he is always committed to staying to his moral compass. He will not promote products or companies he disagrees with. He believes broadcasters can positively influence their viewership while entertaining them. For example, if a chew tobacco company wanted to sponsor one of his podcasts, Gilder would refuse them and take a sponsorship with a chewing gum or sunflower seed company instead.
